PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing) Explained

PGT (preimplantation genetic testing) is the genetic assessment of embryos created during IVF before they are transferred to the uterus. The aim is to help select a suitable embryo.

How is PGT performed?
A few cells are taken from the developing embryo in the laboratory, usually at the blastocyst stage, and examined genetically. The embryos are frozen and stored during this time.

What is the difference between PGT-A and PGT-M?
The main types of PGT, used for different purposes, are:
- PGT-A: assesses the number of chromosomes in the embryo
- PGT-M: examines a known single-gene condition in the family
- PGT-SR: for structural chromosome changes
Who is it considered for?
PGT is not needed for everyone. It may come up in certain situations. The decision is made by your doctor, weighing history and findings together.

The legal framework in Turkey
In Turkey, IVF is applied only to legally married couples, and sex selection is prohibited except for a medical necessity. PGT is considered within medical indications.
Its applicability is decided by the individual situation and the regulations.
